Building the Church

The community came together to raise funds for construction through generous donations, fundraising events, and overseas contributions. Contributions were made through various means, including a parish-wide fundraising drive, jumble sales, Christmas raffles, and donations from well-wishers.

The foundation stone was laid on May 22, 1988, and the building process was undertaken in stages as funds became available. Despite setbacks, including an incident where a temporary structure for workers was destroyed by fire, the project progressed steadily. By January 21, 1990, Holy Mass was celebrated in the unfinished building for the first time.

Acquiring the Land and Early Development

A pivotal moment in the church’s history came when His Grace, Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando, visited the community and recognized the urgent need for a permanent place of worship. Following his visit, Rt. Rev. Dr. Raymond Peiris played a crucial role in securing church funds to purchase a 25.90-perch land in Rukmale, Pannipitiya, adjacent to the National Housing Scheme. The land was officially surveyed in 1986 and was purchased for LKR 87,000.

The community of parishioners grew as families from different areas relocated to Rukmalgama due to the housing scheme. This diverse group of faithful came together with a shared mission—to build a place of worship that would serve as the spiritual center of their new home.

St. Sebastian’s Church, located in Rukmalgama, has a rich and inspiring history rooted in the dedication of its parishioners. Initially, Sunday Masses were held in parishioners' homes due to the lack of a permanent place of worship. Despite facing challenges, including the unavailability of a community center, the faith and perseverance of the community led to the establishment of a dedicated church.

Consecration and Growth

The church was officially consecrated on August 12, 1990, by Rev. Fr. Ernest Poruthota. It was dedicated to St. Sebastian, fulfilling a vow made by Rev. Fr. Marcus Ferdinandez, who had entrusted the project to the saint’s intercession. Over the years, the church expanded with the addition of an altar, a sacristy, additional rooms, and necessary amenities such as electricity and water supply.

A significant milestone was the purchase of additional land, increasing the total church property to 55.90 perches. Contributions from parishioners and benefactors continued to enhance the church, including the installation of wooden pews, a Yamaha Double Keyboard Organ, and other essential fixtures.

A Thriving Parish Community

Today, St. Sebastian’s Church is home to over 200 parishioners from more than 75 families, many of whom originally moved to the area due to the housing scheme. It remains a beacon of faith, fostering spiritual growth, community gatherings, and religious celebrations. With regular services, feast celebrations, and parish activities, the church continues to serve as a vital part of the community.

The story of St. Sebastian’s Church is one of unwavering faith and unity, demonstrating how a committed community can overcome challenges to create a lasting place of worship.
